Trojan trackmen go up against tough competition in two meets

Mendota’s boys’ track team went up against three other schools in the Ottawa Quad on April 30.

The host Pirates took the team title with 97 points, followed by Marengo with 71, LaSalle-Peru with 60.5 and Mendota with 43.5.

The Trojans had six second-place finishes, led by Mason Koch in the long jump (18-4.5) and triple jump (37-7.25). Also taking seconds were Sebastian Carlos in the 400-meter dash (52.25), Gavin Stevenson in the 3200-meter run (12:16.77), Anthony Kelson in the 300-meter hurdles (44.63) and Jamal Lesley in the high jump (5-5.75).

Mendota competed in the eight-team Winnebago Mike Mowen Invitational on May 3 at Winnebago.

The Trojans scored 53 points and finished in seventh place. The host Indians claimed the top spot in the standings with 163 points, while Galena was second with 107 points.

Mendota’s highest finish went to Carlos, who cruised to victory in the 400-meter dash with a time of 51.45.

The Trojans had a pair of second-place finishes. Koch took the runner-up spot in the long jump with a distance of 18-4.75, while the junior varsity 4x400-meter relay team was second in a time of 4:09.27. Runners were Jamal Lesley, Hector Gonzalez, Bailey Ryan and Berat Imeri.
