Rockford Lutheran slipped past Mendota, 7-4, in a Big Northern Conference varsity baseball game on May 3 at Rockford. The game was stopped in the bottom of the fifth because of rain.

The Trojans broke on top with two runs in the third inning, but Lutheran countered with six in the bottom of the frame to take the lead for good. Mendota added single tallies in the fourth and fifth frames.

Mendota’s offense could only muster two hits – singles by Ted Landgraf and Connor Engel. Engel drove in a run with his safety.

Landgraf got the start on the mound and pitched into the third to take the loss. He allowed two hits and six earned runs. Dominik Stamberger came on in relief.

Byron scored a run in the bottom of the first and that proved to be the only tally of the game as the Tigers edged the Trojans, 1-0, in a BNC contest on May 4 at Byron.

Byron’s Luke Mathieu singled to lead off the bottom of the first inning and eventually came around to score on a wild pitch for the only run of the game.

The two teams combined for only five hits. Mendota got singles off the bats of Krew Bond and Andres Castaneda.

Bond pitched the first four innings and was tagged with the tough-luck loss. He gave up just three hits, walked three and struck out three. Emilio Perez hurled a pair of scoreless frames.

A tight game through three innings turned into a 10-run rule victory for Rockford Christian over Mendota, 12-2, in a conference tilt on May 6 at the MHS field.

The visitors held a 2-1 lead heading to the fourth inning when they plated four runs. Christian added six more in the sixth and the game ended after Mendota’s at-bat in the bottom of the sixth.

Bond doubled and tripled for two of Mendota’s four hits. His triple led off the bottom of the first and he scored on a balk. Castaneda added a double for the Trojans.

John Gonzalez was the starting and losing pitcher for Mendota. He worked five innings before giving way to three relievers. Only one of the six runs Gonzalez allowed was earned as the Trojan defense committed six errors.

Mendota and Winnebago got 1 ½ innings in the books on May 10 before the contest was postponed because of rain. No make-up date has been determined.
