MENDOTA – Twelve young women are busily preparing for this year’s Sweet Corn Festival Queen Pageant, which will be held on Friday, Aug. 13 beginning at 7:30 p.m. The pageant will take place on the on the First State Bank stage on U.S. 34 in downtown Mendota.

Sweet Corn Queen contestants busily preparing for big event

MENDOTA – Twelve young women are busily preparing for this year’s Sweet Corn Festival Queen Pageant, which will be held on Friday, Aug. 13 beginning at 7:30 p.m. The pageant will take place on the on the First State Bank stage on U.S. 34 in downtown Mendota.

Pre-pageant and intermission entertainment will feature the music of “We The Least,” a local Mendota fan favorite. Let’s introduce two more contestants in this year’s pageant.

The Mendota Area YMCA has selected Twila Martinson to represent it in this year’s Queen Pageant. She is the daughter of Todd and Lisa Martinson of Mendota. She has blonde hair and brown eyes and stands five feet, seven inches tall.

Martinson is a 2021 graduate of Mendota High School. She was a member of the tennis team, track team, basketball team, math team, and scholastic bowl.  She has also been an active member in Interact Club and Spanish Club, where she received her seal of biliteracy at commencement. She was National Honor Society president and a member of the Spanish Honor Society.  She was also prom queen and on the homecoming committee. In addition, she received the DAR award, was on the IVCC leadership summit, and was a BNC all-conference scholar-athlete.

Martinson will be attending Michigan Technological University in the fall. She plans to earn a bachelor’s degree in Engineering with a specialization in material science engineering.

This summer you will find Martinson working at Black Brothers Co. in Mendota where she is an engineering intern. She is also busy working at the Mendota swimming pool as a lifeguard and at Sip n’ Snack working in the kitchen and at the counter. She also plans to spend as much time as possible with family and friends before going to school in August and hopes to get outside in the sun as often as she can.

Martinson enjoys spending time outdoors, biking and hiking. She also finds joy in swimming, fishing, and boating.

Her plans for the future include graduating from Michigan Technological University in four years and potentially going on to pursue a master’s degree in engineering. In the short term she hopes to get acquainted at school and meet as many people as she can.

The Mendota Women of the Moose #1567 has selected Olivia Eddy as its candidate for the pageant. She is the daughter of Matt and Kirsten Eddy of Mendota. She is five feet, two inches tall and has brown hair and hazel eyes.

Eddy is a 2021 graduate of Mendota High School where she was a cheerleader for all four years and played on the softball team for three years. She also participated in Drama Club and Art Club. She took part in many MHS theater productions and received ILMEA first division awards and a second division ‘Best of the Day’ award. She was an eight-semester honor roll student and was also recognized as an all-conference scholar-athlete.

Eddy will be attending Illinois Valley Community College in the fall where she plans to stay for two years and study Psychology.

This summer you will find her working as a lifeguard at Woodhaven Lakes where she helps keep pool pedestrians safe. Additionally, she works at Purpose Nutrition making drinks that help others gain healthy habits. She plans to save her money this summer and hopes to get a place of her own in the near future.

Eddy enjoys drawing and painting, swimming, cheer, and makeup. She especially cherishes the time she spends hanging out and making memories with her friends.

Her plans for the future include graduating from IVCC and then transferring to the University of Wisconsin-Madison to become a physician’s assistant.

She considers herself to be very outgoing and work-oriented.
