Spikers top Kewanee, take 2nd in tourney

The Mendota Spikers concluded their Three Rivers Conference schedule with a 25-20, 19-25, 25-9 triumph at Kewanee on Oct. 12. Mendota finished league play with a 7-5 record.

Bailey Baird and Reanna Brant supplied 10 and 9 kills, respectively, to pace the squad. Other statistical leaders were Elly Buettner with four ace serves, Lauren Martin with 21 digs and Kya Delao with 17 assists. Katie Jenner helped out with 10 assists.

The Spikers won three of five matches and finished in second place in the Mendota Varsity Rally Invitational on Oct. 16.

Mendota began the action with a 25-21, 27-25 decision over Ottawa. Paige Manning paced the team with six kills, while Baird and Maya Martin added five apiece. Lauren Martin and Buettner tied for the team led with three aces apiece, while Lauren Martin had 23 digs and Delao collected 13 assists.

Forreston dealt the Spikers a 25-9, 25-14 setback in the next round. Baird had three kills, Lauren Martin picked up 11 digs and Delao totaled six assists.

Mendota and Ottawa met again and the result was the same with a 25-16, 25-21 Spiker victory. Baird led with five kills, Lauren Martin had five aces and nine digs, and Delao recorded 12 assists. Marah Setchell and Maya Martin each had four kills.

The Spikers pulled out a 25-17, 27-25 win over Rockford Christian. Manning and Baird had six and five kills, respectively, while Lauren Martin served four aces and dug up 10 Christian serves. Delao topped the club with 13 assists and Buettner chipped in with nine digs.

Forreston won for the second time over the Spikers, 25-17, 25-20, to capture the tournament championship. Peoria Christian finished in third place.

Mendota concluded the regular season with a 21-14 record.
