MENDOTA – Two new officers joined the Mendota Police Department and additional traffic signs will be going up in Mendota after action at the regular meeting of the Mendota City Council on Aug. 19.

Taking the oath of office as new additions to the police department were Randy Tucker and Seth Martin. They were sworn in by Dave McNally of the Police & Fire Commission. Tucker, 33, is from Mendota, and Martin, 28, is from Earlville. Their first day of employment will be Sept. 15 and they will start at the South Suburban Law Enforcement Academy in Glen Ellyn on Sept. 16.

ALDERMANIC REPORTS

Alderman Bill Hunt commended the improvement efforts at the Cherry Estates trailer park on First Avenue. Dilapidated trailers have been removed and new trailers have been put in place.

Hunt said the council will be addressing the issue of legal cannabis by working with the city attorney on ordinances.

During alderman Jay Miller’s report, the council approved a request by the Mendota High School band to hold door-to-door candy sales from 9 a.m.-noon on Saturday, Sept. 28.

Also, the council agreed to issue a beer garden license for the Tri-County Fair.

Alderman John Pierson said a new mural on the building at the southwest corner of Sixth Street and Sixth Avenue is a nice addition to the community.

He also informed fellow council members that the former city ESDA vehicle has been sold.

Alderman Jim Fitzpatrick announced that after a traffic study conducted by the police department, the following intersections will receive traffic signs:  Third Avenue and Fifth Street, yield signs; Third Avenue and Fourth Street, yield signs; Third Avenue and Third Street, yield signs; Third Avenue and Second Street, yield signs; Third Avenue and First Street, yield signs; Third Avenue and Division Street, stop signs to control east and westbound traffic.

Fitzpatrick issued a reminder that bid letting for the motor fuel tax and non-motor fuel tax street maintenance program will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 23 at the city building.

In other action, Mayor David Boelk appointed Paula Daley to the Police & Fire Commission. She is the principal at Northbrook School.

The next regular meeting of the Mendota City Council will be Tuesday, Sept. 3 at 6:30 p.m.
