Mendota could never recover from a slow start and dropped a 53-23 decision to Ottawa Marquette in varsity girls’ basketball action on Nov. 22 at Ottawa.
Marquette outscored the Lady Trojans, 13-0, in the first quarter and then 17-11 in the second period to take a 30-11 halftime lead.
Katie Jenner scored 13 of Mendota’s 23 points, while Cassie Gonzalez chipped in with five markers and three steals. Naitzy Garcia topped the team with seven rebounds.
The Lady Trojans played without two starters, Reanna Brant and Karly Reel.
“Another game that I truly believe having those two girls (Brant and Reel) makes this a much different outcome,” said Mendota coach John Hansen. “I’m proud of the way we competed in the second half.”
Mendota and Bureau Valley battled in the Three Rivers Conference opener and the Storm came out on top, 43-37, on Nov. 28 at the MHS gym.
The Lady Trojans fell behind 11-8 after the first frame and trailed 22-18 at the break. Bureau Valley outscored Mendota by a deuce in the second half.
“It was a disappointing loss because of why we lost,” said Hansen. “We played our butts off and did a lot of great things at both ends, but let ourselves down by missing free throws and giving up rebounds.”
Mendota (1-5, 0-1) converted on just seven of 22 free throws.
Jenner topped the Lady Trojans with 12 points, five steals and three assists. Garcia dropped in 11 points and had seven rebounds, while Gonzalez scored eight points and snared 10 boards.
