STERLING – The Mendota Trojan golfers had their season come to a close in the Sterling Class 2A Regional on Oct. 6 at Emerald Hill Golf Course.
The Trojans finished sixth in the team standings with a score of 377. The top five spots went to Ottawa (339), Princeton (347), Stillman Valley (347), Sterling (363) and Freeport (374). Placing behind Mendota were LaSalle-Peru (381), Rochelle (393), Dixon (397) and Rock Falls (489).
Drake Dennis turned in the low score for the Trojans with a 91. Owen Aughenbaugh checked in next with a 92, followed by Braden McPheeters with a 96 and Jack Beetz with a 98. Mateo Escatel (102) and Liam McGann (125) completed the Mendota lineup.
The overall individual champion was Jonathan Cooper of Ottawa with a round of 80. He is the son of Mark and Sally Cooper. Mark is a former star athlete at Mendota High School and a 1987 graduate of MHS. He currently teaches and coaches at Ottawa High School.
