Mendota District 280 preparing for music trip, summer school

MENDOTA – The Mendota High School District 280 Board of Education met in regular session on March 20.

Principal’s Report

The travel chaperones and volunteers for the 2023 Disney music trip were approved. They include Chris Hansen, Northbrook School band director; Laura Younger, Northbrook School nurse; Deana Brown, show choir choreographer volunteer; Donna Arjes, Julie Lee, Maureen Linden, Marilyn Hanson.

Fourteen students submitted requests for early graduation. The students have expressed an interest to start their college plans, internship/vocational training or to work full time.

Approval was given to renew membership in the Illinois High School Association for the 2023-24 school year. For the 2023-24 term, IHSA membership will not require payment for membership dues or state series entry fees per action of the IHSA Board of Directors.

Summer School

Assistant principal Joe Masini reported on summer school. The district has budgeted through Title 1 money to offer remedial summer school classes. Classes offered are math, English and science. Credit retrieval will be limited to 100 slots. Math/science classes will meet from May 24 to June 21 and English classes will be from May 30 to June 26.

Summer driver’s education will also be offered with approximately 29 students taking the classroom portion and 27-30 students behind-the-wheel. Driver’s education classroom will be held from June 5-30 and behind-the-wheel is to be announced as coordinated with teachers and students.

The following summer school teachers were hired contingent upon student numbers and final scheduling needs: Aaron Sester, Brock Zinke and Mary Stephenitch, driver’s education; Trae Blumhorst and Kevin Wohrley, credit retrieval; Marisela Cervantes, paraprofessional support; Brock Zinke, summer school administrator.

Informational Items

The 63rd annual academic honors presentation was held March 15. A total of 203 students were honored.

As of March 7, the IL 5 Essentials Survey return rate was 20 percent parents, 50 percent teachers and 50 percent students.

The next regular meeting of the Mendota High School District 280 Board of Education will be Monday, April 17 at 6 p.m.
