Mendota hosted seven other teams in the Tom Corrigan Invitational Tournament on Oct. 9 and the Lady Trojans took first-place honors in the event.

Mendota scored 25 points to slip past second-place Sterling Newman, which had 24 points. Coal City and Rockford Lutheran tied for third with 23 points.

The Lady Trojans had two champions in the tournament. Stremlau took care of three opponents to claim the No. 1 singles title, while the No. 2 doubles team of Zoe Finley-Lizzie Bresley also grabbed the championship with three straight wins.

Also competing for Mendota were Jackie Cortez at No. 2 singles (7th place) and the duo of KayLee Barkman-Alexis Finley at No. 1 doubles (2nd place).

"The girls really stepped up today,” said MHS coach Shawn LeRette. “I think they were inspired by seeing Coach Corrigan this morning at the tournament. They really wanted to win for him since he is retiring at the end of the season.

“I could not be prouder of our tenacity and aggressiveness. This means a lot to them as almost all of them are seniors. So, it is a great way to end the regular season.”
