Kite Fest coming to Ottawa May 23

Posted

OTTAWA - Larger than life kites will be flown in the skies above Ottawa on Sunday, May 23. Heritage Harbor in Ottawa will be the host site for the display by the Chicago Kite Company and Rich Crum, director of hospitality for Heritage Harbor, expects the event to be a great addition. “This family event has been in the works for a long time,” Crum noted. “We are very excited to host the Kite Flight for all to enjoy here at Heritage Harbor.”

Those inspired by the kite display will be able to purchase kites ranging in size and type from the Chicago Kite Company. An area will also be provided for those who would like to fly their own kite and everyone is encouraged to participate with their own, no matter the size, to add to the show.

The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Be sure to watch for a candy drop from the kites, which will take place throughout the day. In addition, an Open Space Art Gallery will provide packaged craft projects and a kids’ mural for activities so kids are sure to have a great time.

Food and craft vendors will also be available throughout the day. Anyone interested in participating may contact Donna Reynolds, vendor coordinator, at the Ottawa Visitors Center or they can visit the event page to sign up at www.pickusottawail.com. Vendors will be accepted until May 20. “We would like to have an assortment of family oriented or kid friendly vendors as we expect many families on the 23rd,” Reynolds said.

“This will be an exciting time in Ottawa,” said Curt Bedei, executive director for the Ottawa Visitors Center. “Seeing these monstrous kites riding the waves in the air will be mesmerizing. We encourage everyone to make a weekend out of it and explore Ottawa’s downtown, murals, tours, trails and attractions.”

COVID policies will be in place during the event. Attendees are asked to practice social distancing and wear masks when near large groups.
