James L. Sloan

MENDOTA – James L. Sloan, 86, of Mendota, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2022 at Heritage Health, Mendota. 

Services will be Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2022 at 11:30 a.m. at the Merritt Funeral Home, Mendota with Rev. Jeffrey Green officiating. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Mendota with military honors by Mendota VFW Post 4079. Visitation will be Wednesday from 10-11:30 a.m. in the funeral home. 

Jim was born March 15, 1936 in Mendota, the oldest of three sons to Joseph Tod and Edith Edna (Becket) Sloan. He married Nancy Kratz, who preceded him in death in 1986. He married Marlene Knowlton Inness on Feb. 3, 1989. 

Jim is survived by his wife Marlene of Mendota; three sons, Jeff (Julie) Sloan of Peru, Larry (Wendy) Sloan of Grand Forks, Minn., and Steve (Sara) Sloan of Marathon, Fla.; 17 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Roland Sloan and Ralph Sloan, and his granddaughter Candice. 

Jim was a 1954 graduate of Mendota High School. He joined the United States Army in 1954 serving in the Special Weapons Division until December 1956. Jim began his electrical career in 1960 and was the owner-operator of Sloan Electric until his retirement in March of 2022. In his free time, he enjoyed piloting small planes after getting his license in 1979. He was also a member of Mendota Elks Lodge in the past.
