LA SALLE - The Canal Corridor Association (CCA) has announced plans to kick off a yearlong celebration marking the 30th anniversary of the Illinois & Michigan Canal National Heritage Corridor. The first special event will be a “Canal Corridor Caravan Weekend” that will take place on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 23-24. The Caravan Weekend is free and open to the public.
The two-day, eight-town event will showcase select Corridor sites, which helped make the Illinois & Michigan Canal the backbone of the nation’s first National Heritage Corridor. The Canal Corridor Caravan allows participants to join as many of the activities as desired on the two-day route. Joining the Caravan is as easy as getting in your car and following others or carpooling. Caravan participants can select to purchase pre-planned meals at several stops during the two-day event. Registration is required and can be completed by visiting www.canalcor.org or by calling (815) 223-1851.
The last leg of the Caravan tour will bring guests to LaSalle with lunch at Lock 16 Visitors Center, free rides on the LaSalle Canal Boat, a commemorative Caravan photo at Lock 14, and celebratory cake. The 30th anniversary opening weekend ends with a mini tour of the Hegeler Carus Mansion.
Persons or organizations interested in additional information on the Illinois & Michigan Canal National Heritage Corridor, the 30th Anniversary Canal Caravan Weekend, or to receive updates of plans for the 30th anniversary year are encouraged to visit the website at www.canalcor.org or call (815) 223-1851.
