MENDOTA - Although food for local food pantries is needed year-round, the holidays are a time to especially remember those who need the service. The Mendota Area Christian Food Pantry will package items for a Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner during their holiday distribution dates.

Donations can be made up to Nov. 20 for Thanksgiving and anytime before Dec. 17 for the Christmas holiday, with Tuesday and Thursday mornings being the best drop-off times. Liz Bedford of the Mendota Area Christian Food Pantry said items like fruit, Jell-O, green beans, canned gravy or gravy packets, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, boxed cake mixes, and frosting would be helpful.

The food pantry will also be packaging “kid packs” for households with children during the school break. Each kid pack will feed two children breakfast and lunch for four days. “If we have enough, we will try to give enough for a week,” said Bedford.

Items for the kid packs will include items such as Pop Tarts, granola bars, and fruit and vegetable cups.

Other items that there always seems to be a shortage on are cereals and breakfast foods, canned meat, canned fruit, and tomato products. The pantry is also equipped to handle milk, eggs, cheese, and other refrigerated items year-round.

“Other food pantries are struggling, but we have been blessed up to this point because of such a generous community,” said Bedford.

She commented that it is only because the community continues to support the food pantry that its shelves are stocked as well as they are.

“We are in pretty good shape, but it is always month to month,” she added.
