MENDOTA – Superintendent Kristen School presented the fiscal year budget (July 1, 2013-June 30, 2014) for the Mendota Consolidated School District 289 at the regular Board of Education August meeting on Aug. 15. Once again, the district will operate with a deficit. School projected the deficit at $339,045.
School stated that the deficit is pretty typical of what it has been the past 4-6 years. “Generally speaking, we are spending about $300,000 each year more than we are bringing in,” School reminded the board.
“Our two biggest expenditures are salaries and benefits,” she added. The district is currently in negotiations with the union and hit an impasse last month. School said she is hopeful that they can find a resolution. She also said she did make changes in the budget in the education fund to reflect the anticipated change from the negotiations.
The board set a committee meeting for Aug. 29 to discuss the finances.
The proposed budget will be available for review during regular business hours in the district administrative office, 1806 Guiles Ave., Mendota. A hearing, prior to the adoption of the budget, will be held on Thursday, Sept. 19 at 6:30 p.m. in the district education center board room. Questions or comments concerning the budget or hearing may be directed to Kristen School.
