LAKELAND, Fla. – Dorothy “Dot” Atherton, 80, of Lakeland, Fla., formerly of Paw Paw, died July 9, 2013 due to heart failure at home surrounded by her family.

Interment will be at the Florida National Cemetery (VA cemetery) in Bushnell, Fla. at a later date where she will be laid to rest with her husband.

Mrs. Atherton was born May 5, 1933 in Shabbona. She married Ralph Atherton in June 1952. He preceded her in death.

Survivors include one daughter, Karen (Randy) Moore; two sons, Roger (Jolynn) Atherton and Ron (Tammy) Atherton; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband and her parents.

Mrs. Atherton attended school in Paw Paw and was a high school cheerleader for the Paw Paw Bulldogs. She and her husband owned and operated Atherton Trucking. They became one of the first husband and wife teams to be hired by Clay Hyder Truck Lines. She was a lifetime member of Mendota Elks Lodge 1212 and was a member of Paw Paw Methodist Church. After moving to Florida, she became a member of North Lakeland Presbyterian Church. She spent her life making sure her family was happy and that every moment they spent together was memorable. She spent her free time doing artistry work that will be cherished for life by her family and friends. She was a great wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She will be in our hearts forever.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Good Shepherd Hospice of Auburndale, Fla. or North Lakeland Presbyterian Church.
