MENDOTA – Mendota Elementary School District 289 met on May 1 to seat newly elected board members, Erica Escatel and Joel Johnson, and to reorganize. Escatel is filling the seat made vacant by outgoing Sonia D’Arteaga while Johnson won the seat previously filled by Brandy Howard. The board presented D’Arteaga and Howard with plaques and thanked them for their service.
Johnson did approach the board before being sworn in with his concerns over how the board handled the hiring of teachers and other school personnel at last month’s meeting. He read a prepared statement to the board asking them to be more involved in the process of hiring teachers and other school personnel. Although agreeing that it is not uncommon for school boards to delegate the selection process, Johnson wants to see this board take a more active role. He stated, during his previous 21 years on the board, some poor hiring choices were made.
The board approved filling two positions during the evening’s meeting.
