Blumhorst masterful on hill in MHS's 2-0 win over Oregon

Mendota couldn’t solve the pitching of Alex Cain and lost a 7-0 decision to Oregon in a Big Northern Conference baseball game on April 24 at Faber Field in Mendota.

Cain allowed just four Mendota hits and struck out 16 of the 21 possible outs. He walked two.

Trae Blumhorst collected a double for the Trojans, while Evan Schultz, Brett Becker and Rick Shankles each singled.

Garet Zinke went six innings for Mendota and allowed nine hits and five runs (four earned). He fanned three. Spencer Evans pitched an inning in relief.

The same two teams met 24 hours later in Oregon and this time the Trojans came out victorious, 2-0.

Blumhorst was masterful on the hill for Mendota, giving up just one hit in a route-going performance. He struck out nine and did not issue a walk.

Mendota’s offense struggled again with just three hits – an RBI double by Becker and singles by Schultz and Jon Gehm. Neither of the Trojans’ runs were earned as Oregon committed three errors.

A 15-hit attack lifted Byron to a 15-2 decision over Mendota in varsity baseball action on April 26 at the MHS diamond. The Trojans dropped to 2-4 in Big Northern Conference games.

Blumhorst picked up a pair of singles as the Trojans managed only four hits. Blumhorst and Gehm drove in Mendota’s runs.

The Trojans used four pitchers with starter Becker taking the loss. He allowed five hits and six runs (three earned) in three innings. Nathanael DeLong, Evans and Shankles also saw time on the hill.

Mendota and Bureau Valley split a double-header on April 27 at Manlius.

The Storm came back to claim game one, 5-4. Mendota held a 3-0 lead through five innings before Bureau Valley pushed across five unearned runs in the sixth.

Gehm was the hard-luck losing pitcher. He surrendered eight hits in six innings. He fanned five and did not issue a walk. The Trojan defense committed three errors.

Blumhorst paced Mendota’s eight-hit output with a solo home run and two singles. He drove in two runs. Gehm added a pair of singles.

The Trojans responded with a 7-1 victory in game two. Mendota scored three in the first and was never headed.

Aaron Olsen pitched six innings of four-hit ball to gain the victory. The lone run scored against him was unearned. Olsen struck out 10 and walked five. Matt Dornink hurled the seventh and fanned one.

Spencer Evans stroked a pair of singles for the Trojans, while Riley Schuhler doubled and drove in two. Olsen added a triple, Garet Zinke had a double and Shankles had two RBI.

Mendota fell to 5-12 on the season after getting roughed up by St. Bede, 13-1, on April 29 at the MHS diamond.

Three pitchers went to the mound for the Trojans, with starter Garet Zinke taking the loss. He gave up 10 hits and seven runs in five innings. Dornink and Shankles each pitched an inning.
