Posted: Tuesday, Apr 23rd, 2013

Mendota catcher Mary Wacklerin awaits a throw as Genoa-Kingston's Amy Clark approaches home plate on April 20. Clark was out on the play.

MENDOTA – Ashlyn Kennedy fired a no-hitter and the offense gave her plenty of run support as the Mendota Lady Trojans rolled to a 7-0 victory over Byron in a Big Northern Conference varsity softball game on April 16 at the MHS field.

Kennedy was in control from start to finish as she mowed down the Byron batting order without allowing a hit. The senior right-hander permitted just three walks and didn’t allow a baserunner past second base. Kennedy struck out six.

Mendota’s offense came up with 12 hits, including two apiece by Brooke Carroll (two singles), Kennedy (single, double), Mary Wackerlin (two singles, two RBI), Michaela DeLong (two singles) and Malorie DeFore (two singles). Mallary Phalen and Kelly Christman each had a double for the Lady Trojans.

Mendota scored the only runs it needed in the first inning. Carroll singled and came around to score on a double by Kennedy, then Wackerlin drove in Kennedy with a single.

Carroll reached on an error, stole two bases and scored on a wild pitch in the third, then the Lady Trojans plated four runs in the fifth on six hits, a walk and a hit by pitch. Phalen and Christman had their doubles during the uprising.

Mendota has a 3-1 record in league games.

Genoa-Kingston was a double-header winner over the Lady Trojans on April 20 at the MHS diamond. The Cogs are coached by 1985 MHS graduate Mike Lauer.

In game one, Mendota rallied in the late innings but still came up short, 7-5.

G-K held a 6-1 lead heading to the bottom of the fifth when Mendota plated four runs to make it a one-run game. Reiss Avery reached on a one-out single. After a sacrifice moved her to second, she scored on a single by Christman. Kennedy added another single, followed by a two-run single off the bat of Wackerlin. DeLong drove home the final run of the inning with a single.

The Cogs, who added an unearned run in the seventh, turned the ball over to sophomore Baylie Ullmark for the final two innings and she struck out five of the possible six outs.

Mendota finished the game with nine hits, led by Kennedy with two singles and two doubles.

Kennedy allowed 10 hits, four earned runs, walked six and struck out nine in taking the loss.

Mendota managed only three hits in the nightcap and fell, 9-0.

Carroll, Christman and Phalen each singled for the Lady Trojans, who had only one runner reach third base.

Taylor Browder took the loss for Mendota. G-K picked up 16 hits.
