AMBOY – The Mendota varsity baseball team finally opened the new season and the Trojans dropped a double-header at Amboy on March 30.
MHS suffered a 6-2 setback in the opener. Amboy scored five of its six runs in the first two innings.
Mendota was limited to six hits, all singles. Jon Gehm had two singles and drove in a run. Jaron Robinson also had an RBI.
Brett Becker started on the hill for the Trojans and pitched four innings. He allowed seven hits, six runs, walked two and fanned one. Garret Zinke pitched two scoreless innings.
The Trojans looked like they were going to escape with a split of the twinbill, but Amboy rallied from six runs down to post an 8-6 triumph in the nightcap.
Gehm worked five scoreless innings for the Trojans, giving up just three hits. He walked two and struck out three. Nathanael DeLong came on in relief and was tagged with the loss. He allowed eight hits, four earned runs, walked four and struck out one.
Mendota collected eight hits, but they were all singles. Robinson, DeLong and Rick Shankles had two hits apiece. Robinson drove in a pair.
