MENDOTA – The Mendota Lady Trojans began the new soccer season with a hard-fought 2-1 loss to Rockford Lutheran on March 28 at the MHS Athletic Complex.

Lutheran opened up a 2-0 lead in the first half before the Lady Trojans got on the board on a goal by Marissa Bonnell, assisted by Abby Bromenschenkel. That’s the way the first half ended, and as it turned out, the way the game ended as well. Neither team was able to find the net in the second half.

“This was a great test for us against a powerhouse team and we held our own even having a chance to win,” said MHS coach Chawn Huffaker. “We saw what we need to improve upon and what we are strong at as well. I’m proud of the girls and look forward to the rematch.”

Rubi Arteaga had 12 saves in goal for the Lady Trojans.

Mendota entertained Ottawa on March 30 and again lost by a 2-1 score.

It was the same tandem of Bonnell scoring off an assist from Abby Bromenschenkel for MHS’s lone tally of the game.

Arteaga recorded 15 goalie saves.

“We dominated the middle of the field and had several chances to score, but we just could not find the net in the second half,” stated Huffaker. “We are really getting better as a team with each game we play.”
