MHS announces Regional Spanish Cultural Interpretation Contest results

MENDOTA – The Northern Illinois Chapter of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese held the Regional Spanish Cultural Interpretation Contest at Mendota High School on March 9. Participating schools included Amboy High School, Earlville High School, Henry-Senachwine High School, Mendota High School, and St. Bede. The contest comprised Spanish and Hispanic selections in the areas of multimedia, vocal and instrumental music, poetry recitation, dance, and arts and crafts. All participants are currently enrolled in Spanish.

Mendota High School students who excelled are as follows:

Multimedia: McKennon Escatel-Spanish I, first place

Vocal Music: Brady Hughes-Spanish IV, first place; Lacey Johnson-Spanish I, second place; McKennon Escatel-Spanish I, third place; Whitney Lewis-Spanish I, honorable mention

Instrumental Music-Solos: Bethany Wohrley-Spanish II, first place; Monica Leonard-Spanish III, third place

Instrumental Music-Ensemble: Payton Gehm-Spanish I, Tara Tucker-Spanish III (St. Bede), and Brady Hughes-Spanish IV, first place

Austin Burnette and Madison Myers, Spanish II students, were awarded first place for their performance of the Mexican dance, “Los Viejitos.”

Winners in the Spanish Arts and Crafts were as follows:

First place awards: Mary Brandner, McKennon Escatel, Mauricio Hernandez

Second place awards: Anna Aughenbaugh, Abby Bromenschenkel, Amy Devitt, Paige Simonton

Third place awards: Mauricio Hernandez, Jonathon McConville, Savanna Sondgeroth

Honorable mention: Mary Brandner, Lidia Hill

Remaining team members were Brooke Carroll and Amy Kofoed

McKennon Escatel won “Best of Show.”

McKennon Escatel and Brady Hughes were the recipients of the most outstanding Heritage and Non Heritage students’ awards.

Judges for the contest were Jen Pappas, James Younger, John Jackson, Sandy Swanlund, Mary Michael, Karen Klopcic, Maria Balestri, and Libby Wertz. Rosa Villa of the Mendota Baile Folklorico taught dance. Spanish teachers and members of the NIAATSP are Olga Horn and Mary Ann Roedl.
