Lady Trojans post two of three wins

The Mendota Lady Trojans had their offense clicking from the opening tip and went on to post a 76-54 victory over Rockford Lutheran in a Big Northern Conference game on Jan. 29 at the MHS gym.

MHS poured in 19 first-quarter points, including 11 by Amy Devitt, to roll up a 19-8 lead after the opening period. The Lady Trojans piled on the points at an even faster pace in the second frame and took a commanding 43-23 halftime lead. Mendota had 60 points by the conclusion of three frames.

Devitt finished with 27 points as four MHS players hit double digits. Ally Bromenschenkel torched the nets for 17 points, while Karly Near and Abby Bromenschenkel each added 10 markers.

Mendota rolled up a 27-3 lead after the opening stanza and went on for a 56-24 verdict over Earlville/Leland on Jan. 31 at Earlville.

MHS held a 42-10 halftime cushion and a 56-11 advantage after three periods.

Three Lady Trojans hit double digits, led by Abby Bromenschenkel with 16 points. Ally Bromenschenkel and Brooke Carroll supplied 11 and 10 tallies, respectively.

Mendota fell behind to Byron by a wide margin early in the game and never caught up in suffering a 66-45 loss in Big Northern Conference action on Feb. 1 at the MHS gym.

The Lady Trojans trailed 17-5 at one juncture before cutting the deficit down to four on several occasions, including at halftime when they were behind, 28-24. But Byron slowing pulled away in the third period and led 51-39 at the end of three. Mendota managed only six points in the fourth frame.

Devitt’s 12 points led Mendota, while Abby Bromenschenkel chipped in with 10.

Mendota is 18-8 overall and 5-6 in league play.
