Hard work and fundamental basketball can go a long way toward a team's success, no matter what the level of talent. Byron had the hustle and the basics, while Mendota was sub-par in both, and consequently the Tigers prevailed, 55-48, in Big Northern Conference boys' basketball action on Jan. 17 at the MHS gym.

Byron benefited from stretches of sloppy basketball by the Trojans, especially in the final minutes of the first half when the Tigers were able to separate themselves with a spurt that put them up 26-19 at the half. Byron ended up outscoring Mendota, 16-8, in the second period to widen the gap. A rash of Trojan turnovers aided Byron's cause.

Jon Gehm drilled five three-pointers and led the Trojans with 15 points. James Carroll added 12 points and Trae Blumhorst supplied 10. Blumhorst yanked down 14 rebounds and had five assists, while Evan Carroll picked up four steals.

Mendota was hoping to be the first team to beat Winnebago this season. Things looked promising for a half, but the Indians turned up the heat in the second half en route to a 75-57 win over the Trojans in a BNC game on Jan. 19 at Winnebago.

Winnebago held an 18-16 lead after the first period and a 38-35 halftime edge, but the Indians began to pull away in the third quarter. Then in the fourth, they outscored the Trojans, 22-12, to win going away.

Blumhorst supplied 21 points and 10 rebounds to pace the Trojans. James Carroll and Evan Carroll each hit for 11 markers. Gehm led with four assists.
