1-cent sales tax issue back on ballot

Posted: Tuesday, Jan 22nd, 2013

MENDOTA - Mendota Elementary School District 289 superintendent, Kristen School announced the state currently owes the district $480,282, most of which is special education and general state aid dollars. That prompted School to discuss the 1-cent sales tax referendum, again, at the Jan. 16 Board of Education meeting.

She addressed the failed vote from the November election. "One of the things that we did not do was have face-to-face conversations with the community, educating them on the 1-cent sales tax," School told the board.

She stated that she thought there were a lot of misunderstandings associated with the tax. But, she felt that once the community takes the time to ask questions, see how the tax works, and understands the impact on them, they will support the proposed county-wide tax.

She compared the recently raised levy that will garner the district only $25,000 versus the predicted $500,000 annually the district will receive from the 1-cent sales tax.

After discussions, the board unanimously approved the resolution to place the School Facility Sales Tax for LaSalle County on the April 9 general election ballot.

Concerns were also raised to the board regarding the Northbrook Middle School rewards system. Parent, Jeff Barrett, addressed the board. He said he was there to represent some concerned parents that have spoken to him.

Barrett's concerns were two-fold - first, the rewarding of high academic performers in front of those academically challenged, and second, taking away social opportunities from those low performing students.
