MENDOTA - This year Holy Cross Church wanted their Christmas decorations to be a little different. The result was a festive display of pink poinsettias surrounded by thousands of tiny white lights strung on Christmas trees and garlands throughout the front of the church. Off to the side, the brightly lit nativity scene served as the centerpiece of the display and was enjoyed by parishioners throughout the holidays.

Creative designer of the decorations, Jerry Prokuski, said he and Sally Hedgspeth planned and set up the Christmas decorations at Holy Cross as well as those at about 10 other churches in the area. “We’ve been doing this for many years,” noted Prokuski, owner of Jerry’s Flower Barn. “But this year Father Horton said they wanted something different. The poinsettias were actually marbled with pink and white.”

Prokuski explained that at Holy Cross, he and Hedgspeth also receive help from a group of parishioners who volunteer to stay after services on two Sundays to set up the display. “The parishioners also help take everything down, pack it up and store it for next year,” he added.

A long time floral designer, Prokuski has received numerous awards for his creative ability over the years. And yet, knowing that Holy Cross Church members enjoyed the decorations enough this year to mention it to the local newspaper seemed to make his day.
