PERU - For the second year, area shoppers were treated to a Random Act of Culture with the singing of Handel’s "Hallelujah Chorus" at the Peru HyVee on Saturday. Chris Kelsey, who again organized the event with help from conductor Norm Engstrom, estimated that about 100 singers gathered Saturday afternoon for the surprise performance.

Tucked in between floral department displays and cases of produce near the store’s dining area, the singers surprised grocery shoppers with an enthusiastic rendition of the Christmas classic. “We decided to change sites this year and thought that HyVee would be a good place,” Kelsey said later. “Their manager, Doug, was very excited."

Kelsey noted that part of the goal of Random Acts of Culture is to share great music with people who are not expecting it. “We got a great response at HyVee - the checkouts all stopped and listened,” she said. “People in the dining area were especially appreciative of being there to experience something so unique. I think everyone participating had a wonderful experience!”
