Mendota FFA hosts Land Use competition

MENDOTA - On Oct. 4, the Mendota FFA chapter hosted and participated in the Section 7 Land Use CDE. This is a competition that tests a studentís ability to properly judge soil features and make recommendations on the use of that particular area. Students must evaluate soil texture, structure, water holding capacity, permeability and slope.

This year, the contest took place in a field located by the Mendota Tri-County Fairgrounds. In this field four pits, each measuring six feet, were dug in order to evaluate the soil.

FFA members who competed include Isaac Hebert, John McConville, Bryce Otterbach, Kourtney Kobilsek, April Ohst, Kimberly Piskie, Kassidy Kobilsek, Toby Ruetner, Michael McLachlan, Kaylee Althaus, Taylor Hahn, Kayleen Kaiser, Nick Arteaga and Catie Kamin.

Mendota scored very well in this competition. As a whole, the team placed 2nd. Individuals placing were John McConville, 2nd and Isaac Hebert, 10th.
