Despite blip, MHS golfers still red hot

Mendota overcame penalties and other obstacles to post a 178-183 victory over Rockford Lutheran in varsity boys’ golf action on Sept. 3 at Rockford.

Cody Phalen led the way for the Trojans with a low score of 43. That was five strokes off the pace of medalist Spencer Hurst of Lutheran. Jaron Robinson came in second for Mendota with a 44, followed by Riley Schuhler (45), Mark Prescott (46), Colton Saylor (47) and Krueger Keene (52).

Mendota also prevailed in the freshman-sophomore match, 215-222. Nolan Kaleel’s score of 48 was the low round for the Trojans, with Ethan Guelde checking in a close second with a 49. Completing the team were Jake Nurnberg (57), Mark McConville (58), Zach Hunt (61) and Branson Barrett (67).

The Trojans saw their unbeaten streak come to an end when Byron shot a sizzling 158 to outdistance Mendota’s 185 on Sept. 4 at Byron.

Once again, Phalen checked in with the low score for MHS at 44. Two Byron players were in the 30s, led by medalist Jarrett Smith’s 36. Other scores for the Trojans were Robinson 46, Schuhler 47, Saylor 48, Prescott 49 and Keene 58.

Byron also claimed the junior varsity and freshman-sophomore matches.

In JV action, the Trojans shot a 207 compared to 175 for Byron. Competing for Mendota were Nathanael DeLong (48), Thane Kaleel (51), Ben Ross (52), Kevin Schulze (56), Tanner Schwartzbach (59) and Evan Schultz (61).

The Mendota freshman-sophomore team dropped a 211-227 match. Comprising the Trojan team were Guelde (55), Nurnberg (56), Nolan Kaleel (57), Hunt (59), Baylee Miller (60) and Barrett (62).

Two Mendota girls took to the course, with Montana Schlesinger shooting a 54 and Brianna Kaleel a 70.

After a brief hiccup, the Trojans got back to their winning ways with a 168-178 triumph at Marengo on Sept. 9.

Robinson mastered the course for the Trojans with a low round of 37 to capture meet medalist honors. Par is 36. The rest of the Mendota crew all shot in the 40s. They included Phalen (43), Saylor (43), Prescott (45), Schuhler (48) and Keene (49).

Mendota wasn’t as fortunate in the freshman-sophomore match, dropping a 208-226 decision.

Guelde’s 50 was good enough for meet medalist. Also shooting in the 50s were Hunt (56) and Nolan Kaleel (57), while Nurnberg, Chandler Schultz and Santana Gloria each carded a 63.
