PERU Ė This one was not for the faint of heart. Mendota and Princeton hooked up in an edge-of-your seat nail-biter in the opening round of the St. Bede Class 2A Softball Regional, and the contest was full of drama from start to finish.
The finish didnít come until each team played three extra innings where the Lady Trojans finally nudged across the winning run to claim a 5-4, 10-inning victory on May 15 to advance to the championship game against host St. Bede.
With the game tied at 4-4, the Lady Trojans loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth, but could not score, and then Princeton did the same in the top of the ninth, but Ashlyn Kennedy worked out of the jam by getting to pop outs.
Mendota had two more baserunners in the bottom of the ninth and Princeton put two on in the top of the 10th, all to no avail.
The Lady Trojans finally finished off the Tigresses in the bottom of the 10th. Kennedy led off with a single and she moved to second on a ground out by Michaela DeLong. Mary Wackerlin smacked a single up the middle to score Kennedy with the game-winner.
Kennedy finished with nine strikeouts and no walks to gain the hard-earned victory.
