DeKALB – Mendota’s No. 1 doubles team earned a trip to the IHSA Boys’ State Tennis Tournament after its performance in the DeKalb Sectional on May 17-18.
James Carroll and Mark Prescott teamed up to finish second in the sectional and will continue on in the state tournament. The doubles duo opened up the tournament with a 7-5, 6-0 victory over a team from Ottawa. Next up was a team from DeKalb, and Carroll-Prescott scored an easy 6-1, 6-3 triumph.
The MHS pair made it to the championship match when they were 7-5, 6-1 winners over the Rochelle team. In the finals, Carroll-Prescott lost their only match of the sectional, 6-2, 6-3, to LaSalle-Peru, to finish in second place.
Mendota’s No. 2 doubles team of Jon Hohertz and Nick Phalen split their two matches. They defeated a Belvidere team 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the opening round and then were eliminated by a team from L-P, 6-3, 6-2.
The Trojans also sent two singles players to the sectional. No. 1 Cody Phalen was victorious in his opening match, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, over Samuel Morales of Belvidere. In the quarterfinals, Phalen dropped a 6-4, 6-2 match to Jackson Evensen of Ottawa.
At No. 2 singles, Mendota’s Joey Meyer lost his only match, 6-0, 6-1, to Brendan O’Rorke of Rochelle.
Mendota finished third out of 10 teams in the standings. DeKalb won with 25 points, followed by L-P with 24 and the Trojans with 16. Rounding out the team results were Ottawa (13), Rochelle (10), Belvidere North (8), Morris (4), Belvidere (2), St. Bede (0) and Burlington Central (0).
The State Tennis Meet will be held May 23-25 at various courts throughout school districts 211, 214 and 220 in the Chicago area. The tournament is host by Hersey High School in Arlington Heights.
