PLANO – The Mendota Trojans will have one representative in the IHSA Class 2A Boys’ State Track Meet after the team competed in the Plano Class 2A Sectional on May 18.

Sophomore Wyatt Martinson will be making the trip south after he took first-place honors in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.16. He barely nipped Sandwich’s Austin Breunig, who had a time of 23.18.

Martinson also competed in the 100-meter dash and had the fastest time in the preliminaries at 11.33. But three other runners bettered their times in the finals and Martinson ran an 11.37 to place fourth. The winning time was 11.21 by Javon Montgomery of Plano.

Mendota’s only other event that placed in the top six to earn points was the 4x800-meter relay, which finished fifth in a time 8:51.87. Making up that relay were Tyler Anderson, Gage Glazebrook, Jared Fritz and Ethan Sack.

Also competing for the Trojans at sectional but not placing in the top six were Omar Bugarin (12.16 in 100-meter dash preliminaries), Ryan Reeder (eighth in triple jump at 41-6.75 and eighth in high jump at 5-11), Sack (ninth in 1600-meter run at 4:47.03), Tyler Schmitt (18th in 3200-meter run at 11:32.46), Patrick O’Sadnick (17.82 in 110-meter hurdles preliminaries), Bryce Otterbach (ninth in 300-meter hurdles at 43.97), the 4x200-meter relay team (eighth in 1:36.41), Mitchel Humphrey (11th in high jump at 5-9, 10th in pole vault at 10-9) and Tyler Reddin (seventh in pole vault at 11-9).

Pontiac easily outdistanced the rest of the field in the team standings with 127 points. Placing second was Aurora Central Catholic with 67 points, followed by Geneseo (61), Plano (51), LaSalle-Peru (45), Sandwich (45), Rock Island Alleman (42), Ottawa (31), Princeton (30), Fairbury Prairie Central (26), Mendota (16), Coal City (12), Illinois Math & Science Academy (3), Morris (2) and Streator (0).

The State Track Meet will be held May 23-25 at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.
