STERLING – Mendota knew being bumped up a class from 2A to 3A would be a challenge this season.

Despite being favored to win by virtue of its fourth seed, the Lady Trojans saw their season come to a close when fifth-seeded Dixon posted a 51-45 decision over Mendota in the first round of the Sterling Class 3A Regional on Feb. 11.

The Lady Trojans closed out the campaign with a 19-9 record.

Mendota was slow out of the gate as Dixon opened up a 20-10 lead after the opening period. But the Lady Trojans got things in gear in the second frame by outscoring the Duchesses, 16-3, to grab a 26-23 halftime advantage.

“The girls responded very well after digging that hole in the first quarter,” said MHS coach Kevin Geldon. “Things could’ve gotten away from us after being down so big early in the game, but we kept our poise and were able to take a lead to the locker room.”

But Dixon regrouped during intermission and was able to regain the lead in the third quarter, a margin it maintained throughout the rest of the contest. The Duchesses were up 38-32 after three periods.

Amy Devitt poured in 17 points to pace the Lady Trojans, followed by Ally Bromenschenkel with 13 and Abby Bromenschenkel with 11. Devitt and Ally Bromenschenkel led with seven rebounds apiece, while Brooke Carroll had four assists and Karly Near came up with three steals.

The Lady Trojans were outrebounded, 29-24, and committed 10 turnovers, three less than Dixon.
