Trojans bow out in regional
Posted: Tuesday, Mar 2nd, 2010

It was one and done for the Mendota Trojans in the Princeton Class 2A Boys’ Basketball Regional.

The Trojans suffered a 50-33 setback to Port Byron Riverdale in an opening-round game on Feb. 24 at Prouty Gym in Princeton. MHS ended the season with a 5-24 record.

Generating offense was once again the downfall of the Trojans. They scored only six first-quarter points and found themselves down, 12-6, after the first eight-minute session. The Rams took a 23-13 lead to the locker room at intermission.

Mendota’s best quarter was the third when it outscored Riverdale, 15-11, to close the gap down to six. But a five-point fourth quarter by the Trojans compared to 16 by the Rams ended the contest.

“The kids played hard,” said Trojan coach Jan Thompson. “We were unable to overcome some first-half shooting woes.”

Will McLachlan had 13 points to pace Mendota, while Jordan Fritz added eight markers.

“Our overall record doesn’t show it but our kids were in a lot of games this year. They never gave up. This group of seniors will be missed. Our seniors were Cale Kimrey, Jordan Fritz, Kurtis Knapp, Vince Bruno, Travis Martinson and McKennon Biers.”
