MENDOTA – The 2013 Sweet Corn Festival Queen will be chosen to reign over the festivities of Mendota’s 66th Annual Sweet Corn Festival this weekend, August 8 - 11.
Be sure to join WALLS 102 personalities “Dog” and “Danica” on Friday, Aug. 9 as they MC the evening of suspense and entertainment. Choosing one queen and two attendants from the 21 beautiful contestants will be a very difficult choice.
Festivities will get underway at 7:20 p.m. on the First State Stage on Washington Street downtown with the pre-pageant entertainment, the ever-popular Decatur Park Singers, sponsored by Pepsi Beverages Company. These spirited singers and dancers will perform again at intermission of the pageant, while the judges are making their decision on “Who will wear the crown?”
Let us introduce to you the final three contestants in this year’s pageant.
Molly Meyer will represent the Mendota VFW Post #4079 and Auxiliary in this year’s event. She is the daughter of Gary and Becky Meyer of Mendota. Molly stands five feet, three inches tall and has brown hair and brown eyes.
A May graduate of Mendota High School, Molly played softball for all four years of her high school career and volleyball for two years. Molly is an Honor Roll Student, having attained the Honor Roll for seven semesters. She also worked in the Business and Principal’s offices while at MHS.
Molly will be attending the University of St. Francis this fall, seeking a bachelor’s degree, specializing in radiology.
This summer you will find Molly working at Ready, Set, Grow Daycare in Mendota, taking care of children 3-11. She is also spending time with her family and friends, and hopefully spending time in Wisconsin on the lake. She is also shopping and having an Audrey Hepburn movie marathon!
Molly’s hobbies include going to hockey games and White Sox games, reading, listening to music, and watching old movies. Her favorites are Audrey Hepburn and Molly Ringwald films. She also enjoys being with her family and friends, and shopping. Molly is also interested in event and party planning and enjoys babysitting.
Her plans for the future include graduating from St. Francis and getting a job in the field of radiology, specializing in either CT or MRI screening.
Molly says she always has a smile on her face and loves people and children.
Karly Near will represent the Mendota Optimist Club in this year’s Queen Pageant. She is the daughter of Brian and Jackie Near of Mendota. She stands five feet, eight inches tall and has blue eyes and blonde hair.
Karly is a May, 2013 graduate of Mendota High School, where she served on the Student Council all four years. She was President of her class for two of those years. Karly was a member of the volleyball and softball teams for two years, and played basketball all four years. Upon graduation Karly received Sports Participation Awards and a scholarship for her interest in nursing.
She plans on attending Illinois Valley Community College in the fall and playing for the women’s basketball team. She eventually wants to attain a bachelor’s degree in nursing.
This summer you will find Karly working at Heritage Health in Mendota as a CNA, caring for the residents. She is also babysitting and taking a summer math class at IVCC.
Karly says she loves to play basketball, work, and spend time with her family.
She also enjoys doing things out of the ordinary like roller skating at a rink, or going to Six Flags to ride the crazy roller coasters.
Her plans for the future include getting her associate in science from IVCC in two years and then transferring to St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria to get her RN and bachelor’s degree. She would then like to work at a children’s hospital.
Karly really enjoys time with her family. She loves to make people laugh and smile. She loves being around people and loves to talk.
Karly enjoys helping others and having the satisfaction of being able to make people happy.
The Mendota Fire Department has selected Morgan Mumm as their candidate for the queen pageant. She is the daughter of Melissa Mumm of Mendota and the late Scott Mumm. Morgan is five feet, three inches tall and has blue eyes and blonde hair.
Morgan is a May, 2013 graduate of Mendota High School. She played softball for three years while attending MHS.
This summer, Morgan has vacationed in Hawaii. She is also spending time with her friends and job hunting. Morgan enjoys going places and doing things with her friends, painting and spending time at the Mendota Fire Department.
Her plans for the future include a possible career in the emergency services field. She would like to get involved in firefighting.
Morgan’s major interests include fire fighting and helping others. Morgan says she is energetic and outgoing and will help anyone in need.
