MENDOTA - Sweet Corn Festival Mini Queen Ella Coss and Mini King Quin Holland are helping Santa prepare for his upcoming visit to Mendota on Saturday, Nov. 17. Santa will be in town that day for Mendota's "Christmas Around the Square." Mendota merchant's shops will be decorated for the holidays and stocked with a great selection of holiday gifts.

Santa stopped at Floralcrest, Inc. recently to view the Christmas poinsettias and let everyone know that "Christmas Around the Square" will take place from 1-3 p.m. with horse drawn carriage rides departing and ending across from Veterans Park on Washington Street.

Local churches will present "A Day in Bethlehem" on the lawn of the Hume-Carnegie Museum from noon to 2 p.m. Enjoy going back in time to visit a marketplace featuring crafts, food, and a live nativity.

Santa reminded the little Sweet Corn Festival royalty that he will be in Mendota to listen to the children's wishes from 1 to 3 p.m. on that Saturday. The "man in red" will be in his house at the First State Bank parking lot in downtown Mendota. Parents may bring their cameras to take photos that day.

Local service clubs have also been invited to take part in the festivities. The Mendota Optimist Club will be set up in the First State Bank parking lot with hotdogs and hot chocolate for the children. The Kiwanis Club will be having their annual pecan sale at Veterans Park, just in time for holiday baking.

The Mendota Area Chamber of Commerce, sponsors of "Christmas Around the Square," invite everyone to "Shop Mendota." They will also be kicking off a new holiday promotion that day, "Shop Local."

Shop Local is a contest, which encourages people to shop locally for Christmas and gives them a chance to win some great prizes. The Shop Local contest runs from Saturday, Nov. 17 through Monday, Dec. 31. For every $20 spent in participating businesses, you will receive one sticker for your "Shop Local Card." Fill the card and turn it in at the Chamber office. You can fill as many cards as you wish, but you must shop in at least three different businesses to qualify to win the grand prize. The grand prize will be drawn on Jan. 4 and will consist of gift certificates and prizes from participating businesses. Two additional prize baskets will also be given away at that time.

The Mendota Chamber encourages everyone to come out and enjoy "Christmas Around the Square" and to pick up Shop Local cards at participating businesses. Retailers will be advertising specials to kick-off the holiday season. It's a great time to get some of that Christmas shopping done.
