Lily PADS resale boutique to expand

Posted: Tuesday, Oct 9th, 2012

Work began Oct. 8 on a six-week project that will add 4,000 square feet to Lily Pads Resale Boutique in Peru. The resale shop will remain open and continue accepting donations during that time. Lily Pads is the largest funding source for IV PADS homeless shelters. (Reporter photo)

PERU - Illinois Valley PADS opened on Sept. 1 this year, a month earlier than usual, and the shelters will remain open an extra month next spring, continuing operation through the month of May. PADS has also expanded the number of hours they are open each day from 12 to 16. PADS director Carol Alcorn said both increases have been made possible due to the support of donors on many levels in area communities.

During PADS' first month of operation this September, Alcorn reported that nine families with 14 children stayed at the shelters in Peru and Ottawa. "There were over 50 individuals served just in this first month," she said.

In addition to food and shelter, PADS provides Life Skills education to all clients. Alcorn also noted that with the extra services, PADS has increased their staffing employment, which provides needed jobs in this economy.

Currently, the largest funding source for PADS is their Peru resale store, Lily Pads Resale Boutique, which opened in 2009 and provides nearly half of PADS' annual income. With a clear need for the services provided by PADS, Alcorn said their board of directors recently decided to increase the funding capability of Lily Pads by constructing a 4,000 square foot addition at the east end of the 10,000 square foot building.
