Funding to help with improvements in the city of Mendota were announced at the Feb. 1 meeting of the Mendota City Council.
Mayor David Boelk reported that Illinois Department of Transportation funding in the amount of $1,475,000 was secured by the city for road improvements to East Fifth Road, which is also known as Welland Road to the east of Mendota.
In a related matter, city engineer Ed King said bids were to be opened on Feb. 3 for water and sewer extension work along East Fifth Road.
The other funding came to the Mendota Fire Department under the 2009 Assistance to Firefighters grant program through the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Department of Homeland Security. Chief Dennis Rutishauser reported that $56,600 was received from the program, with 95 percent federal share and 5 percent city share. He said the money will be used to replace the department’s 1-3/4” and 2-1/2” water hose that was originally purchased in 1976, and also to replace all of the nozzles. To date, the department has secured more than $500,000 in grants since 2003.
